In 1997 the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers established national standards for the Certified Bookkeeper program.
Candidates for this industry-wide level of recognition must document at least 3,000 hours of experience, and pass examinations in six crucial areas of bookkeeping, accounting and taxation:
- Adjusting Journal Entries
- Error Correction
- Payroll
- Inventory
- Depreciation
- Internal Controls and Fraud Prevention
